James Brown - I Don’t Want Nobody To Give Me Nothing
Selah Sue is a young belgian artist whose music offers a quite unique and powerful blend of folk and reggae/ragga.

I believe it was 1997 and I was living in California when I first watched the movie Corrina, Corrina.
It’s in my top 10 favorite movies and hands down my favorite Whoopi Goldberg movie of all time. I remember seeing it the first time because of the jazz club scene. Whoopi Goldberg takes the little girl there and the beautiful Jevetta Steele was on stage.
I remember the light was beaming off of her microphone but it was pretty dark in the club. She had a pianist, a saxophonist, an upright bass, and a drummer. That’s it. And she sang Over the Rainbow, the famous song from The Wizard of Oz.
I was mesmerized. I had never felt so engaged by a performance before nor had I ever heard what elegance sounded like.
She transformed that song. The smooth jazz, her light but powerful voice. This song sounded like the greatest lesson of all time. For a second, she was my beautiful aunt who was about to share the keys to happiness…
And the dreams, that you dare to dream
Really do come truuueee
she would sing… and I would nod while thinking, “Yes ma’m, they really do come true don’t they?” And then the saxophone would rise up and take over the melody, sending us all on a roller coaster with him. Helpless sadness and resounding hopefulness. I was exhausted by the time the song ended.
And then she sang again…
If happy, litt-le blue birds fly…
beyond the rainbow
why, ooh whyyy can’t I
And I would nod again and cry, “You can! You can too!”
I literally wanted to climb inside of my television and live in this song.
I’ve yet to hear another singer take this song to the level of Ms. Steele and I feel indebted to her for letting little girls dream along with her.

Turn yo car back around
Cause the world doesn’t need another break up song
Artist: Allen Stone
Song: Another Break Up Song
If you’re not listening to Allen Stone yet, the time is now. It’s easy to compare his soulful melodies and falsetto hooks to the likes of Justin Timberlake or Robin Thicke but I’d much rather you take him as he is.
Allen Stone is a talented musician and a passionate singer. Check him out.
An unexpected source put me on to Cocaine 80s not too long ago and I was instantly smitten. Upon further review (because I’m a music nerd) I learned that James Fauntleroy has penned a few of my favorite tracks from other artists as well.
Cocaine 80s blurs the genre lines. A surreal combination of Soul, R&B, Folk, and Acoustic Dope. In comparison, it reminds me of Frank Ocean. Don’t quote me but I believe No I.D. is responsible for the clean production. It’s some of that feel-good music.
The video above is a song called Birdsong. The description contains info on Cocaine 80s and a link for you to download. The EP is around 7 tracks long and is seriously worth the download.
** Also, if you ever feel like singing about a girl and not doing the Trey Songz ‘I have a mucus infection but Ima still try to sing’ voice, then this might work for you.
Phonte ft. eLZhi - Not Here Anymore
Artisti: Morcheeba
Song: Slow Down
No write up here. Just click play and feel this shit…
- I changed my mind. How about a quote?
Full of tension
‘Cause you love the chase
You just need your
Own space
When the day is through
All you got to do is slowdown
When the day is through
All you got to do is slowdown

Covering Frank Ocean’s We All Try
If you haven’t heard Frank Ocean’s We All Try… go listen to that. It could be the charming keys in the background or the combination of light, happy chords. Perhaps it’s the simplicity of the lyrics, which evoke a new outlook on life. Or better yet, maybe it’s just the talented singer who is almost preaching in time.
At the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter what combination of things make this song work. It’s feel good music and I can listen to it on repeat while reflecting on mostly good things.
I think a truly impressive artist can use their songs to inspire an emotional response in the listener. The best of entertainers mastered this skill early on.
But this song? Feels like…. hope.
Hope - as a noun: The feeling that what is wanted can be had
or
that events will turn out for the best
Hope - as a verb: to look forward to with desire and reasonable confidence
or
to believe, desire, or trust
Words can’t express my boundless gratitude towards an artist who can inspire me to feel hopeful. I struggle to think of a better gift.
In the last year in particular, I have become far more optimistic than I have ever been in my life. That’s not because in the last year, things have been going the way I wanted, but more so that I learned to let go of things that aren’t important.
I want to be a positive thinker, swelling with love. And so, I shall.
Apart from religion, racism, sexism, or whatever else you can use to separate yourself from another, I believe in being human. And I try to be a better person today than I was yesterday. I try.
Cause I just don’t believe we’re wicked
I know that we sin but I do believe we try
We all try, the girls try, the boys try
Women try, men try, you and I try, try, we all try

“Woke up and realized I was free… to be… anything”
Georgia Anne Muldrow
My favorite Lauryn Hill song. It puts me into a trance every time I hear it.
Selah - Lauryn Hill
Everytime this dude (Miguel Jontel) covers a song that I already like, I fall in love with it again. I don’t know if he does his own arrangements but all his stuff is pretty serious. He kinda reminds me of Raphael Saadiq. In this vid, he is covering MF Doom’s Curls…I dig it.
Not only put me on a Miguel fix but then I had to go find some of my favorite Doom tracks and give them a listen too.
